Abstract

Annual evaporation in the Lake Patzcuaro watershed was partitioned as follows: evapotranspiration of terrestrial vegetation, interception losses, lake evaporation and evapotranspiration of aquatic plants. Terrestrial evapotranspiration was estimated from the records of six stations and seven atmometers (ETgage). Lake evaporation was measured with the BREB method. The interception loss was calculated with lineal relations to different classes of vegetation, and evapotranspiration of aquatic vegetation with local measurements by open path chamber. The evapotranspiration of vegetation was 308 mm < ETR < 503 mm (± 60), lake evaporation 1 179 mm, aquatic evapotranspiration (ETH) 1 824 mm, and interception losses amounted to 102 mm < EI < 227 mm (± 51). Water balance by subwatershed showed a deficit of 12 mm in Ajuno and over 65% in the lake. In the rest of the subwatershed the water balance was positive for surface runoff and infiltration or deep percolation: 18 mm < (P-TE < 156 mm (± 53). The results show the importance of vegetation and the lake in the distribution of evaporation.
