Abstract

In the Lerma-Chapala basin, 3 509 industries were inventoried. Through the knowledge of type of industry and the average monthly wastewater discharge the discharges of metals to the Lerma River were estimated. The concentrations of metals in suspended and deposited sediments were quantified at various locations along the basin. The enrichments of six of these metals (cadmium, chromium, copper, nickel, leads and zinc) were related to the geographic location of the municipalities where industrial wastewater was discharged to the basin and to the chemical behavior of each of the metals.
