Abstract

Although the use of fluvial dynamics (morphodynamics) is increasingly used in the planning of rivers, the aims, scope and methods of morphodynamic studies have not been developed. The restoration of meanders cut by channels is planned for the Fluvia River in Catalonia (northeastern Iberian Peninsula), which is notably mobile. This papers explains what the morphodynamic study of this river involves, considering the scarcity of resources. This study analyzed the longitudinal profile of the river, the role of some of the diverter dams on the fluvial dynamics, the availability of gravel on the alluvial bars, the meander migration and the bedload transport capacity. A single occurrence of a meander cut-off was also analyzed as well as the morphodynamic risks of restoration.
